And God Created Woman? (2012)

Whilst researching female bodybuilders for a commissioned feature I was struck by the huge amount of adoration with which these women, with their sculpted bodies are regarded in their world. Often regarded with suspicion and derision in more mainstream society, in the bodybuilding world an entirely different concept of beauty emerges, a concept selected and exercised by the women themselves.

With these pictures I want to look at ideals of beauty and expectation in the presentation of a ‘beautiful’ female body, and also at how photography itself colludes with this expectation.

(This work was first exhibited at Long White Cloud Gallery, London, as part of Photomonth 2012). Many thanks to Lisa Cross.
